A man has been arrested by armed police following an incident in Swindon town centre.
Firearms officers and a dog unit were deployed to reports of an attempted robbery in the Euclid Street area at around 3pm this afternoon (Friday, 16 September).
They were spotted running towards Wyvern Square, before returning to their vehicles and patrolling central Swindon for the suspect involved.
A short time later, the National Police Air Service helicopter from Oxfordshire started circling overhead, providing an all-important eye in the sky.
The search area expanded, with armed officers arresting a man on a bicycle near Mannington Recreation Ground in Rodbourne.
Whilst Wiltshire Police has not yet confirmed what weapon was used, Wiltshire 999s is led to believe it was a gun – but further details are not yet known.
The serious incident took place near Clarence House, just a stone’s throw from the central police point.
In an earlier statement, the force said: “Officers are currently dealing with a report of an attempted robbery in Swindon town centre.
“We were called to the area near to Clarence House just after 3pm following a report that a suspect was carrying a weapon. Enquiries are currently ongoing.”
