A suspect has been arrested by police at gunpoint following an incident in Devizes town centre.
Armed officers were deployed following a 999 call reporting that a male entered a restaurant in Market Place at around 5.30pm today (Wednesday) with a suspected firearm.
Nobody was injured in the dramatic incident and the make – thought to be a teenage boy – was told the leave the premises.
Searches were immediately carried out in the area and a suspect matching the description was located in Sidmouth Street, where he was detained on the ground at gunpoint.
He was found in possession of a firearm, believed to be a BB gun. It has subsequently been seized.
The male was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and has been taken to Gablecross custody in Swindon for questioning.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “This incident happened during a busy time in the town centre and will no doubt have been witnessed by a large number of people.
“We understand the concern it will have caused and would like to reassure residents that officers acted swiftly and made an arrest within minutes of the initial report.
“We’d urge anyone who witnessed the incident to call 101 and quote log number 243 of today.”
