UPDATE 8.30AM: The road has reopened past the scene – delays remain.
The M4 has been closed westbound following a blaze involving a vehicle transporter.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) announced this morning they were ‘en route’ to the incident between junctions 17 and 18.
A spokesperson for the service said: “Crews from Chippenham, Malmesbury and Royal Wootton Bassett are currently on route to a fire involving a large vehicle on the M4 westbound between J17 to 18. The road has been closed.”
National Highways has confirmed the westbound carriageway has been closed.
A spokesperson said: “Traffic has been STOPPED on the M4 westbound in Wiltshire between J17 (for Cirencester) and J18 (for Bath) due to a vehicle transporter which has caught fire.
“[DWFRS] are en-route to scene. Congestion is building on approach.”
