A lorry has narrowly avoided colliding with a property in a Wiltshire village.

The thatched cottage was thankfully saved by a deep bourne during the smash on the A338 in Collingbourne Ducis at around 4.30am today (Sunday, 10 July).

A white Ford Focus also ended up in the ditch as the driver swerved to avoid the lorry. The driver of the lorry was uninjured, while the Ford driver was taken to hospital with minor wounds.

At 9am, recovery work was ongoing at the scene – with the road blocked to motorists.

Villager Simon Gilford said: “Another Home Bargains delivery almost completed in Collingbourne Ducis early this morning.

“We have to stop HGVs speeding through our village(s). The A338 needs to be reclassified to a B road NOW!

“Home Bargains lorries are a really big issue along the A338 and this is not the first incident involving them.

“Thankfully neither the innocent driver of a white Ford Focus (which also ended up in the bourne) and the driver of the offending HGV were not hurt.”

Another local resident said: “This is one of my worries living in Collingbourne, a lorry ending up in the front of our house.

They added: “They shouldn’t be allowed through here, especially at the speed most of them drive. Amazes me how they can drive but can’t read speed limit signs.”

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision involving an HGV and a car on the A338 at Collingbourne Ducis, at about 4.30am today (10/07).

“The driver of the car was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

“The road was closed for a number of hours to allow recovery of the vehicles involved.”
