Kingfisher photographers are ‘putting lives at risk’ by gathering on narrow bridge

A small number of photographers are ‘putting lives at risk’ by gathering on a narrow bridge.

Every week dozens of people visit Bradford on Avon to take pictures of a famous family of colourful kingfishers diving into the River Avon for fish.

One of the best positions for shooting the incredible birds is from Town Bridge – but it’s narrow and pedestrians are struggling to cross it safely. However, the majority of photographers attending the area area respectfully, and ensure they are no blocking the route.

Gathering on the bridge forces people on foot to pass by stepping into the road. Because of the width of the bridge, it’s hard to do this without risking being involved in a collision, especially at busy times.

One concerned local said she was “concerned for the safety of people crossing the town bridge” after four men – including one sat on a chair – gathered there this morning (Friday, 4 November).

She claims to have witnessed a “young lady having to step off the pavement into road with traffic flowing on both sides” as the photographers snapped away completely oblivious.

Adding: “They’re great photos when you post them. But please have a care as to how much space you are taking up on the pavement.”
