UPDATE: Man rescued from Chippenham river was ‘fleeing police officers’
A water rescue operation in underway in Chippenham town centre.
A huge number of 999 resources were deployed to the River Avon, off the high street, following reports of a man having entered it.
Specialist water rescue firefighters are attempting to rescue the man, who has been swept downstream towards the radial gate.
The bridge, on the high street, has been cordoned off by police as the incident is dealt with.
Dozens of members of the public have stopped to watch events unfold.
UPDATE 3.30PM: The man has been rescued from the water and is now in the care of paramedics.
