A teenage boy has been arrested in connection with an incident in Royal Wootton Bassett where a swan was shot dead.

It was reported to police on Saturday after a member of the public found the body of the swan in the canal near Bincknoll Lane.

This morning officers arrested a 16-year-old boy and seized a gas-powered weapon, two air weapons and a number of pellets.

He is currently in custody at Gablecross Police Station.

Sergeant Katharine Smith, from Royal Wootton Barrett Community Policing Team, said: “We know this incident caused understandable outrage in the local community so I am pleased that we are able to provide this update on an arrest.

“However, our enquiries are very much ongoing and we would continue to urge anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward.

“If you know something then please call Wiltshire Police on 101, quoting crime reference 54210026564. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
