A driver has been hospitalised after smashing their car through Nationwide’s window.

Emergency services were called to the bank in Castle Street, Trowbridge, following reports of the dramatic collision shortly before 2pm this afternoon (Friday).

A silver Honda Jazz was driving into the building through the front window. The bank was closed at the time of the incident.

The driver has been taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath for treatment, according to South Western Ambulance Service. Their condition is unknown at this stage.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police said: “We are currently dealing with an incident in Castle Street, Trowbridge.

“Officers responded to reports that a car had been driven into Nationwide at 2pm this afternoon (14/03).

“There are no reported injuries but the driver is being supported by our ambulance service colleagues at the scene.

“Castle Street is expected to remain closed into the evening until the car has been recovered.”

The force didn’t say whether the driver is believed to have suffered a medical episode, or deliberate drove into the building.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service raced to the incident, but said the driver had managed to self-extricate from the vehicle and the building before their arrival.

“One crew from Trowbridge has attended, the driver was out of the vehicle when we arrived, and the electricity board is now on site, so we are assisting with scene safety”, a spokesperson added.
