A driver was filmed ‘hitting 180mph’ after a car meet in Chippenham.
Wiltshire Car Scene arranged an impromptu gathering on Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate yesterday evening (Boxing Day, 26 December).
Drivers, and motorcyclists, raced at high speed as approximately one hundred people turned out to spectate – with numerous motorists performing dangerous manoeuvres.
In footage, at least two drivers were seen spinning their car’s wheels to create a cloud of smoke – as they prepare to take off down the road.
A video also showed a driver hitting speeds of up what appeared to be 180mph on the M4.
One innocent motorist on the motorway — who had her baby in the car — said a group of speeders “scared us to death”, labelling them “selfish idiots”.
They added: “There were multiple of them all together. Absolutely terrifying. Thank god we weren’t in the middle or fast lane. Otherwise we’d all be dead 100%.”
Wiltshire Police created Operation Staysail in a bid to crackdown on disruptive and dangerous car meets, though it’s not clear if officers attended this unplanned event.
Footage seen by Wiltshire 999s only featured one police vehicle – a marked roads policing BMW. There didn’t appear to be a large police presence, as often seen at Swindon meets.
Another car meet is planned for 30 December, but the location won’t be released until shortly before the event is due to take place.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We were made aware of a car meet involving approximately 10 vehicles, that took place at Bumpers Farm, Chippenham shortly after 7pm yesterday (26/12).
“The group disbursed at about 9.30pm and no arrests were made.”
