A drink driving Royal Marine who fled from police has been disqualified from driving.

Oliver Husband, 31, of Heddington, Calne, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol at a hearing at Swindon Crown Court on Friday (21 October).

On August 7 this year, at around 3.40am, officers on routine patrols in Chippenham sighted Husband come skidding out of Wood Lane and pass their vehicle in the opposite direction.

Due to the manner of driving, the officers immediately turned their vehicle around and pursued Husband, who was driving well in excess of the 50mph speed limit.

Husband then drove through two sets of red lights before driving through a 30mph estate at around 60 to 70mph.

He then turned down Rudman Park, a dead end, and at the end of the road Husband and his passenger fled on foot. Husband was eventually caught by officers and gave himself up.

Husband was initially arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police, and was further arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a breath test revealed he was more than twice the legal limit.

On Friday, he was disqualified from driving for 18 months with an extended driving test, fined £350 and given a community order of 100 hours of unpaid work to be undertaken over the next 18 months.

PC Storm Brand, of the Chippenham Response Team, said: “Husband’s driving was incredibly reckless and it was fortunate that there was no traffic in the area, nor members of the public on foot, otherwise the outcome could have been a lot worse.

“Husband put himself, his passenger, our officers and the public at huge risk through his actions.

“He pleaded guilty at the subsequent hearing and the sentence means he’ll now be banned from the roads.”
