A Devizes criminal assaulted a security guard after stealing alcohol.
Samuel Sneyd pleaded guilty to theft, attempted theft and assault by beating when he appeared at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on Friday (26 April).
Prosecutor David Logan-Rose said the 38-year-old stole £207.55-worth of alcohol – a box of Thatchers Cider and nine bottles of Baileys Irish Cream – from Sainsbury.
On the same date, 7 December 2023, he tried to make off with meat belonging to Marks and Spencer. He also assaulted a security guard in an attempt to punch him.
The defendant, a well-known local criminal who is regularly put before the courts, was previously jailed for two years over a knifepoint robbery attempt in Devizes in 2020.
He entered the Esso garage in Nursteed Road, pulled out a machete and demanded staff hand over cash and cigarettes – but left when a customer walked in.
Sneyd, who lives on a boat on the Kennet and Avon Canal, will be sentenced at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on 20 May. He was released on unconditional bail.
