Chippenham’s openly gay mayor has condemned homophobic graffiti in the town.

Councillor Declan Baseley said the derogatory words and phrases on public footpaths near Derriads Pond, off Drake Crescent, show “why Pride is important”.

“F**k gay pride” and “Suck my shlong” were just two remarks spray-painted on the ground, alongside numerous penis drawings.

“It’s always disappointing to see vulgar graffiti in Chippenham, these derogatory comments highlight why Pride is important in our community”, Mr Baseley said.

Adding: “The LGBTQIA+ community is invisible and whenever we show ourselves, the invisible homophobes also seem to appear.

“I would encourage residents to download the MyChippenham app, they can report all kinds of issues such as litter, vandalism and graffiti directly to our environmental services team.

“Our council will work swiftly to remove offensive graffiti once it is reported.”
