A car has crashed into a bus shelter in Devizes – after the driver is believed to have suffered a medical episode.
The vehicle left the road in Market Place and mounted the pavement shortly before midnight on Saturday (26 September), coming to rest within the shelter.
Devizes CCTV Manager Noel Woolrych said the car entered Market Place at 11.59pm and was not speeding before the collision.
He said: “It would appear that the driver suffered a ‘medical’ episode prior to colliding with the bus shelter.”
A passing ambulance was flagged down following the crash and the driver was given medical attention.
Police arrived at the scene several minutes later, while members of the public also stopped to help and contacted the emergency services.
The vehicle was recovered and council workers attended to make the damaged bus shelter safe.
The shelter had only recently been replaced after the previous structure was damaged by a lorry reversing into it.
Cllr Iain Wallis said guests at a nearby hotel had initially suggested the car appeared to have been travelling at speed.
However, Mr Woolrych’s account, based on the town’s CCTV, states that the vehicle was not speeding.
Cllr Wallis said: “If this had happened during the day it could have been quite a tragic result.”
He said the latest damage would now be dealt with through the insurance process, with residents raising concerns about how long replacing the shelter could take.
He added: “Thankfully this time the supplier is known to the council so one hopes it will be quicker but insurance companies will be involved.”
