A car crashed into a tree on a lane in Wiltshire earlier this afternoon (Tuesday).

Emergency services were called to London Road in Shrewton shortly before 3.30pm following reports of a single-vehicle road traffic collision.

A silver Mercedes-Benz estate left the road in a sharp bend and impacted a large tree head-on.

The male driver, aged in his 30s and from Monmouth, sustained serious injuries.

The man – who was the sole occupant of the car – was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters from Salisbury and Wilton stations.

He was stabilised before being airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southampton General Hospital by Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Wiltshire Police has started a forensic collision investigation, which is expected to take several hours.

The road, which links Shrewton with Larkhill, is expected to remain closed until the early hours of tomorrow morning (Wednesday 12 July).

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any relevant information, should call the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log 241 of 11 July. Alternatively, email [email protected].
