There are calls for a pedestrian crossing to being installed after a teenage girl was struck by a car in Devizes at the weekend.
Emergency services raced to reports of the road traffic collision in Horton Road at around 12.30pm on Sunday (23 November).
A 15-year-old girl was hit by a car while crossing the carriageway near Wellington Drive.
In Wiltshire 999s’ incident group on Facebook, a local resident reported seeing ‘nine police and four ambulances’ on scene.
At least four police vehicles, one ambulance and an operations officer’s car remained on scene at 1.30pm – with others having already been stood down.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police confirmed that the teenager sustained only minor injuries. She was taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon “as a precaution”.
The child’s mother has since spoken out about the crash, praising the emergency services and others who helped.
She said: “I can not fault the 999 response and care she has received, from those passerbys first on scene; Warren and Lisa – to the police, ambulance crew and staff at the Great Western Hospital.
“She is doing well, the recovery starts now.”
Local residents are now calling on the council to install a pedestrian crossing. This incident is the second involving a teenage pedestrian being hit in recent years.
In 2021, a teenage boy sustained significant injuries after being knocked down by a van – which had reportedly overtaken a stationary bus.
Councillor Guy Lamb-Hughes urged locals to get in touch, stating that the parish council will support proposals for a pedestrian crossing at the crash site.
He wrote: “Highways are the responsibility of Wiltshire Council, however Bishops Cannings Parish Council will of course be willing to support any proposals and we have the contacts within WC – please send us a message on our FB page, or send our clerk an email on [email protected]”.
