UPDATE: Dog walker ‘horrified’ to find man hanged on Caen Hill Locks bridge

A man’s body has been recovered from a canal in Devizes this morning (Monday).

Emergency services were called to the scene at Caen Hill Locks, on the Kennet and Avon Canal, at 7.15am.

Several fire appliances, including specially-trained water rescue firefighters from Stratton St Margaret Fire Station in Swindon, were in attendance.

A Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) Incident Response Unit from Bristol was tasked with the incident alongside several local ambulance personnel.

Firefighters used a boat and water rescue gear to remove the man’s body from a bridge.

Shortly before 9.30am, the deceased was taken into a waiting ambulance before being transferred into a private ambulance around 15 minutes later.

Wiltshire Police confirmed that the man’s death is being treated as “non-suspicious”.

A spokesperson said: “[Our] thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

The area was cordoned off whilst emergency crews worked at the scene. All 999 vehicles had left the scene by 10am.

A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “A crew from Devizes and a water rescue team from Stratton were called to Caen Hill locks, Devizes, at 7.20am this morning to assist the police.”
