A Chinook has made an ’emergency’ landing in Chippenham after it reportedly developed a fault this morning (Thursday).
The huge military helicopter – thought to have been on a training sortie – touched down in a field off the A4 in Pewsham at around 10.10am.
The Boeing CH-47 Chinook aircraft had flown north-west from RAF Odiham in Hampshire, one of the UK’s Chinook bases, before landing in Wiltshire.
It claimed the aircraft developed a fault during the flight, resulting in the unscheduled landing. It’s believed mechanics are en-route.
The helicopter is about 30 metres from the busy A4, with drivers slowing down or parking at the roadside to look at the rare sight.
The Chinook is a heavy-lift military helicopter operated by the Royal Air Force and is easily recognisable by its distinctive twin-rotor design.
The aircraft is used to transport troops, equipment and supplies, as well as supporting military operations and humanitarian missions.
It is not currently known how long the helicopter will remain at the site or when it will be able to continue its journey.
The MOD has been approached for comment.
