A drink driver has admitted losing control and colliding with an innocent motorist.

50-year-old Alan Leat pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit at Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (1 December).

The defendant, of Glenville Close, Royal Wootton Bassett, also admitted a charge of driving a vehicle without a valid MOT test certificate.

Leat lost control of his AIXAM Crossline on Noremarsh Road on 23 June this year, mounting the path and grass verge before ploughing into the side of a Mercedes.

The collision happened at 3.30pm and nearby pavements were full of parents and schoolchildren.

The driver of the Mercedes suffered minor injuries whilst the defendant had to be freed from his vehicle by firefighters before being taken to hospital.

He later provided a sample of blood for analysis. The result showing Leat had 221 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrammes.

Magistrate Robert Shuler sentenced him to a 12-month community order, including a six-month alcohol addiction treatment requirement and 10 rehabilitation activity days.

He also imposed a curfew of four weeks, meaning the defendant will be unable to leave his home between 7pm and 7am daily – including on Christmas Day.

Leat was banned from driving for 24 months, must pay a £40 for no MOT and a £95 victim surcharge.
