A motorcyclist has been airlifted to hospital following a crash on the A36 near Salisbury.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance and numerous other emergency services rushed to the road traffic collision in Stapleford at around 11.20am this morning (Tuesday).

The incident involved a silver Volkswagen Polo and an motorcycle near the junction with the B3083 Berwick Road.

The biker, a man aged in his 60s, sustained potentially life-changing leg injuries and was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southampton General Hospital for urgent care.

The occupants of the car involved are understood to have escaped injury, whilst the lorry pictured at the scene was not involved.

A forensic collision investigation is being carried out, which will result in a lengthy road closure – expected to remain in place until tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 19 July).

National Highways spokesperson said: “Drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys during this afternoon’s peak following a serious collision on the A36 between Deptford and Wilton.

“The road was closed shortly after 11:45 following the collision involving a car and motorbike. The closure is likely to remain in place throughout this afternoon while Wiltshire Police deal with the incident.”

Drivers are being advised to use the following diversion:

  • Eastbound via the A303 to Longbarrow roundabout and the A360 south to rejoin the A36
  • Westbound in reverse

Wiltshire Police is asking anyone who saw what happened, or has dashcam footage, to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 104 of today (18 July).
