UPDATED: A Melksham road was closed this morning after paramedics were called to treat a patient who had reportedly been hit by a car.

Emergency services were called to the incident on the A350 between Farmers Roundabout and the A365 Bath Road at around 10.30am this morning.

Despite 999 crews being called to a reported road traffic collision, Wiltshire Police says the casualty — an elderly man — was not struck by a car as first thought.

It is not clear how the man came to be in the road, but one witness told Wiltshire 999s that it appeared he’d walked into the road ‘in an attempt to get hit by a car’.

He was treated in the middle of the busy road near Asda before he was taken to an ambulance on a stretcher and transported to hospital ‘as a precaution’.

The road reopened at around 11.30am.
