The A350 is closed in Chippenham after the carriageway turned to ice.
Emergency services were called to a multi-vehicle crash on the southbound stretch between Junction 17 of the M4 and Kington Langley at around 6am this morning (Friday).
It’s believed a patch of surface water froze over, causing vehicles to spin out of control.
It happened as a result of the road freezing over on a section which regularly has surface water on it.
All but one of the damaged vehicles have been recovered – but the carriageway will remain closed until the ice has been dealt with and it is not longer dangerous to drive on.
“Following a multiple vehicle collision, [Wiltshire Police] have closed the #A350 southbound between J17 of the M4 and Chippenham”, a National Highways spokesperson said.
Adding: “Officers are working with local service providers to reopen the road as soon as it is safe. Please seek an alternative route if possible…”
Wiltshire Police say the road is likely to remain shut for “several hours” while vehicles are recovered.
The A429 in Corston, near Malmesbury, is also closed following numerous road traffic collisions. Police say the closure will “remain in place for several hours”.
UPDATE 10.45AM: Police have now reopened the road.
