A man has died after reportedly falling from a bridge on the A303 in Wiltshire.

Police were called to what is described as a “welfare incident” on the major route near Amesbury at around 9.30am this morning (Tuesday).

Numerous ambulance resources were on scene, with a witness claiming paramedics were provide treatment to a person directly under a footbridge.

The bridge was taped off, with officers standing guard to ensure pedestrians did not cross while the incident was ongoing.

The A303 was shut between A345 Amesbury and A3028 Bulford, but reopened shortly before 11am.

Wiltshire Police has confirmed that a man, aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances and our thoughts are with his family”, a spokesperson for the force said in a short statement.
