Police have issued a new warning ahead of a planned ‘car meet’ in Swindon.

The force says it will robustly deal with any disruptive behaviour at the event tonight (Saturday) – for which the location has not yet been revealed publicly.

Specialist officers are on standby to deal with any concerning incidents – from criminal damage and disorder to dangerous driving and defective vehicles.

Earlier, Wiltshire Car Scene organisers said that ‘corrupt police are trying to kill off car meets’ and told members of the group to record ‘harassment’ from officers.

In a statement, Wiltshire Police said: “Officers are aware of people looking to arrange a car meet in Swindon this evening.

“We recognise that genuine car enthusiasts do so lawfully and in a manner that does not cause upset to local residents.

“For those who are inclined to attend, please expect to see a proportionate policing presence.

“Some groups however are deliberately disruptive and cause significant concern within our communities.

“Anybody taking part in disruptive car meets in Wiltshire should know that it will not be tolerated and those involved will be dealt with robustly.

“We have specialist police and partnership resources to support this approach, if required.”

Officers will use available legislation to take action against any illegal behaviour, including seizing vehicles, issuing penalty notices, notifying insurance companies of illegal modifications, and making arrests and prosecutions where necessary.

The police will also use mobile and static cameras as well as drones to capture evidence of any incidents that may occur.

Superintendent Guy Elkins has emphasised that public safety is always the police’s priority: “We will take any action necessary to prevent dangerous driving and anti-social behaviour. If individuals take the risk of driving dangerously, they could face severe consequences, including seizure of their vehicles and arrest.

“I would urge anyone with concerns or information on criminal activity to contact us on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

“I would like to reassure the community that we are proactively monitoring information and working closely with partners and landowners.

”We’d also like to remind event organisers that they must seek permission from landowners and the district or city council before organising any such event.”
