A Trowbridge woman punched a police officer to aid a robbery suspect’s escape.

Shardai-Louise Watts previously pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting an emergency worker and appeared at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court for sentencing today (Thursday).

Kerry Richardson, prosecuting, said that police were responding to reports of a 16-year-old boy being robbed of £25 in cash on 1 August this year.

The defendant and man – a well-known local criminal – were stopped by officers in relation to the allegation and the man became aggressive. As a result, PC Taheri started to arrest him.

However, Watts punched the officer in the face – and the man was able to escape. She also fled the scene, but both were found and arrested a short time later in Market Street.

Watts lashed out during her arrest for assault, repeatedly kicking PC Martin in the shin. The female officer described the kicks as being “deliberate” and “hard”.

During a search of her person, a small amount of cannabis was found. She also admitted a charge of possession of a Class B substance.

Naomi Winsor, defending, said her client is “looking to rebuild her life and welcomes to the intervention of the probation service”, adding that Watts – who is on benefits – is “eager to pay compensation”.

The defendant, of Leisler Gardens, Trowbridge, was handed an 18-month community order with 30 rehabilitation activity days and told to pay a £50 fine.

PC Taheri was awarded £50 compensation, but PC Martin was not compensated for her assault. Watts will also have to pay a surcharge of £114, but no prosecution costs.
