A cyclist who was trapped under a van in Bradford on Avon escaped serious injuries.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on the Town Bridge at around 9am this morning (19 May).

The male cyclist was involved in a collision with a Sainsbury’s home delivery van and ended up beneath it, sparking a significant 999 response.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance sent several critical care medics to the incident in their helicopter – which landed on Culver Close Playing Field – and a rapid response vehicle.

Firefighters from the town, supported by a crew from Trowbridge, provided emergency first aid to the man alongside an off-duty doctor prior to the arrival of ambulance crews.

“Crews then used airbags and trolley jacks to lift the van off the male so ambulance crews could do a proper assessment of him”, a Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

Despite the dramatic scene, the road was closed in both directions for just one hour – reopening to motorists shortly after 10am.

The man is believed to have suffered a fractured wrist and miraculously escaped any serious injuries.

Sainsbury’s says it is “supporting the police with their investigation” into the road traffic collision.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police spokesperson: “We received a call at 9am this morning to a collision in Bridge Street, Bradford-on-Avon, which involved a cyclist and a van.

“The road was closed for a short time to allow emergency services to work at the scene.

“The male cyclist was taken to the Royal United Hospital with a suspected fractured wrist.”
