Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) believe an electric blanket was responsible for a blaze that severely damaged a house in Swindon overnight.
Emergency services were called to the mid-terraced property in Beatrice Street, Gorse Hill, at around 11.20pm last night (21 February).
As first reported by Wiltshire 999s, The fire broke out in the attic bedroom of the home, before flames burst through the skylight window and began travelling into the first floor.
A DWFRS spokesperson said: “Four fire crews attended, from Swindon (x2), Stratton and Westlea, together with the aerial ladder platform from Swindon.
“Four breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets and a covering jet, and the stop was at 12.24am.
“The attic and first floor of the property were badly damaged but the occupiers were able to escape unhurt. Adjoining properties were evacuated as a precaution and checks made to ensure there was no fire spread.
“We believe the fire to have started accidentally in an electric blanket.”

Advice includes:
• When buying an electric blanket, go to a reputable retailer and make sure the product meets the current UK and European safety standards – for example, BEAB Approved.
• Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before use.
• Never use a hot water bottle in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if the blanket is switched off.
• Unplug blankets before you get into bed unless they have a thermostat control for safe all-night use.
• When storing an electric blanket, don’t fold it as this may damage the internal wiring. Store flat or rolled up.
• Examine the blanket regularly for signs of wear and tear – for example, worn or frayed fabric, scorch marks, wires poking through the material, any damage to the flex. If you find an issue, get the blanket replaced.
• Get your blanket tested by a qualified electrician at least every three years and replace blankets every ten years.
