A ‘kind soul’ who was crushed by a car in Purton has died, his family have confirmed.
Nigel Hopgood suffered significant injuries when a Citroen C4 Picasso he was working under collapsed on top of him in High Street on 10 September.
The incident sparked a major emergency response and he was taken to the Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital in Bristol for urgent treatment.
Despite the best efforts of 999 responders and hospital medical teams, he was declared deceased the following day (Friday, 11 September).
His passing was confirmed by his sister Amanda in the Wiltshire 999s group.
She wrote: “Nigel my brother has passed away sad day for mum my other 2 brothers and sister his daughter and son and the bigger family x such a kind soul”
Others have also paid tribute to Nigel – whose age has not yet been confirmed publicly – on social media following news of his death.
One of his work colleagues wrote: “He was my work colleague, only with him on Wednesday and he was looking forward to having 2 days off to do odd jobs he said… he passed away yesterday, everyone at work is truly gutted… sleep well Nigel”
Another person wrote: “Nige, I’m so sorry, will be sad not to bump into you around often, rest in peace and love to your family.”
Wiltshire Police previously confirmed that his injuries were life-threatening, and said the incident was not being treated as a criminal matter.
High Street was closed in both directions for around two hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.
At the height of the response, an ambulance, two ambulance cars, two HART Incident Response Units, the air ambulance critical care car, two fire engines from Westlea and Royal Wootton Bassett, and several police vehicles were parked in the road.
Wiltshire Police has been approached for a statement.
