A casualty has been airlifted to hospital after crashing a telehandler into a ditch.

Emergency services were called to a single-vehicle road traffic collision located around half a mile off the A342 between St Edith’s Marsh and Rowde on Saturday (21 February).

The incident was difficult to access, with Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance scrambled. Numerous local fire and ambulance crews were also sent to the scene.

Due to the many emergency vehicles blocking the road at around 3.30pm, police closed the A342 outside Silverwood School in both directions.

When first responders reached the crash, a man – aged in his 70s – was found to be trapped inside the telehandler, which had overturned in a ditch.

The casualties was rescued from the machine and airlifted to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon for treatment.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said that crews from Devizes and Calne, along with a technical rescue team from Westlea, were deployed.

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that two double-crewed land ambulances, an air ambulance, and a rapid response vehicle attended.

A spokesperson added: “We conveyed one patient by air ambulance to Great Western Hospital.”

Wiltshire Police said that a “type of tractor machinery had overturned and a man in his 70s was trapped”, with the road closed until approximately 4.15pm.

The force confirmed that the injured man was “flown to the Great Western Hospital”.
