A 78-year-old woman from Calne has appeared in court charged with fraud.
Ann Lewis, of Woodland Walk, appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court charged with fraud by abuse of position and fraud by false representation.
Crown prosecutor Andy Newman said the defendant allegedly took a large sum of money from a family friend to pay a tax bill between March and August 2018.
Lewis is accused of paying £800 towards the alleged victim’s outstanding tax bill despite having been given a figure of around £10,000.
It’s said she used the remaining money for her own gain, and as result, her alleged victim was forced to declare bankruptcy.
Defence solicitor Charlotte Frizzell said her client indicates a guilty plea.
Magistrates decided the case was out of their jurisdiction due to the amount of money involved. They adjourned the case to Swindon Crown Court in June.
