ECG is one of the most crucial inventions for the modern healthcare sector as it helps identify heart disease promptly and accurately. However, as time passes, modern health care is becoming reliant gradually on this heartbeat-detecting machine.

Hence, knowing about ECG and how it works is very necessary for any patient, medical enthusiast and more. That’s why this blog aims to uncover what is an ECG and what does an ECG test tell you, and more. Let’s get started!

What is an ECG?

ECG or electrocardiogram is one kind of test that is done to check the heartbeat of the people, and with the help of ECG, you can examine if the heartbeat is normal or abnormal or how slow or fast it is, and it records the electrical activity of the human heart which includes rhythm and the rate.

ECG is prescribed to the patient when any heart disease needs to be detected. The health profession makes ECG for many reasons, including detecting heart attacks, coronary heart disease, problems with heart breathing, arrhythmia and more.

What does an ECG test tell you?

Now come to the point where you will learn, What does an ECG test tell you? As you know, ECG is a test to measure the electrical activity of the heart, and it is beyond just a way of knowing about the heartbeat. Check the below to find out what does an ECG test tell us about heart disease:

  • Identifying arrhythmias: Arrhythmias is also known as irregular heartbeat which is a problem with the rate or rhythm of your heartbeat. Your heart may beat too quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm. With the help of ECG, the health profession can detect various types of arrhythmias and help determine the appropriate course of action.
  • Detecting Heart Attack with ECG: With the ECG, you can detect a heart attack. As we know, a heart attack happens when the blood supply to a portion of the heart is closed, leading to tissue damage. ECGs provide distinct patterns that help in indicating the presence of a heart attack; they allow for immediate intervention.

ECG recognises characteristics that cause heart attack, including ST-segment elevation or depression, and these alterations reflect the heart’s response to reduced blood flow. As a result, doctors can swiftly confirm the diagnosis and initiate necessary treatment to minimise heart damage and improve patient outcomes.

  • Monitor Heart Health: As ECG tells the conditions of the heart, health professionals monitor heart condition with the ECG. It can tell the cause of chest pain and show signs of blocked or narrowed heart arteries.

You can learn more in detail with the help of the ECG Training course by Phlebotomy Training Institute. You will get on-site training to learn about ECG interpretation and obtain a certificate which will help you enter this profession.

  • Find the Cause of Chest Pain, Fast Pulse, and Shortness of Breath: ECGs can find the cause of chest pain, fast pulse, shortness of breath, weakness or fatigue. As you know, disease can be transmitted through genetics. Thus, ECG can detect such prior disease if it is in your body.
