A man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting police during a home repossession.

Firearms officers were deployed to the incident in Concorde Close, Southwick, at around 1.30pm on Monday afternoon (30 June).

Wiltshire Police say officers were “present while bailiffs attempted to execute a County Court warrant to repossess a property”.

But as things went awry, armed police were sent to the scene alongside two dog units and a drone team.

Firearms officers were sporting full ballistic kit and carrying rifles, while dog handlers were wearing ballistic helmets.

Locals claimed a man had threatened officers with a gun, but a statement by Wiltshire Police does not make any reference to a weapon.

Residents living nearby were told to stay indoors for their own safety, and the A361 Frome Road was closed to both motorists and pedestrians.

Several hours later, when the incident concluded, a 50-year-old man was arrested and questioned in custody on suspicion of two counts of assaulting an emergency worker.

He’s since been released on bail while investigation work continues.

The force confirmed that no emergency workers required medical attention for injuries.

Editor’s note – correction: In a statement, Wiltshire Police initially said the man had been charged – and provided his name, age and address for publication. It has since been confirmed that the man was arrested, but has not been charged with any offences at this stage. We have removed the man’s identity to address this error.
