Volunteer Wiltshire police officers have unwittingly caught a murder suspect – while carrying out a roads policing operation.
Special constables from the Specials Roads Policing Unit were deployed across Trowbridge, Melksham and Bradford on Avon last week.
The proactive operation focused on road crime and the so-called ‘Fatal Five’ offences which are most likely to contribute to serious collisions.
During the operation, the volunteer officers inadvertently arrested an out-of-force murder suspect – after stopping them as part of the roads op.
Wiltshire Police has not released any further details about the suspect or the murder investigation.
Officers also recovered a stolen vehicle and seized four vehicles for offences including no insurance, disqualified driving, dangerous vehicle defects and tax offences.
Four mobile phone offences were detected, alongside one seatbelt offence and two speeding offences in North Bradley.
One motorist was reported for careless driving, while two illegally used vehicle-related items were seized.
The Special Constables also attended a non-injury road traffic collision.
Wiltshire Police said the results highlighted the important role its Special Constables play in keeping communities safe, tackling criminality on the roads and taking action against those who put other road users at risk.
