A utility company has issued an update after a gas leak caught fire in Swindon.

Emergency services responded to reports of a fire, including a ruptured gas pipe, on South Marston Industrial Estate at around 2.30pm this afternoon (Thursday).

Wales & West Utilities, responsible for the gas network locally, said appears to have been caused by a “third party” carrying out works in the area.

The incident was described as “complex”, but engineers involved hope to stop the leak and reopen the road at some point this evening.

Stirling Road, Wellington Road and Viscount Way are currently closed off – closed to motorists and pedestrians. A 100 metre cordon is in place.

In a statement, gas emergency service manger Darren Keighley said: “We were called to reports of a gas leak in the Viscount Way area of Swindon this afternoon and immediately sent a team of engineers to investigate.

“On arrival, we discovered that a third party working in the area had damaged a gas pipe causing it to leak and catch alight.

“We are working with the emergency services to stop the leak and make the area safe.

“As a precaution, and to keep road users, the public and our colleagues safe while we work, Viscount Way has been closed at its junction with nearby roads.

“Our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as possible to stop the leak and make the area safe.

“This is a complex job, but barring any unforeseen circumstances, we hope to be able to stop the leak and reopen the road this evening.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of local residents and road users while we carry out this essential repair.”

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is warning people to avoid the area.

A spokesperson said: “Firefighters in Swindon are working alongside Wales and West Utilities to deal with an ignited gas leak in Stirling Road near South Marston Industrial Estate.

“A 100m cordon is in place which is affecting entrance/exit from the estate. Please avoid the area.”
