Three pregnant sheep have been killed in a horrific dog attack in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Police say the serious incident took place in Upper Chute, around four miles north-west of Ludgershall, at around 7.30am on Wednesday (1 April).

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the attack, which occurred in a field off Malthouse Lane.

A flock of ewes was attacked by what is believed to have been a loose dog. Three ewes in lamb died and several others were left injured.

Officers believe the dog may have been off the lead while being walked in the area, or could have escaped from a nearby home.

Due to the severity of the injuries, police say it is likely the dog to have been covered in blood following the fatal mauling.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or email [email protected] quoting reference 54260038839.

Wiltshire Police are reminding dog owners that it is crucial to keep animals under control around livestock, even if they would normally return when called.

Residents living in or near agricultural areas are urged to ensure their properties are secure to prevent dogs escaping onto farmland.

Under the Dogs Protection of Livestock Act, it is an offence for a dog to attack sheep or other livestock, or to chase them in a way that could cause suffering, abortion or loss of produce. It is also an offence for a dog to be at large in a field or enclosure containing sheep.

Following changes to the law, owners could face an unlimited fine. Police also have powers to seize dogs suspected of livestock worrying, obtain DNA samples and enter premises to identify animals believed to be involved.

Anyone who witnesses sheep worrying is urged to call 999 immediately.
