A thatched roof has been saved from flames after eight fire crews responded to a kitchen fire.

Approximately 40 firefighters from across Wiltshire and Somerset were called to the incident in Heddington, near Calne, at around 11am today (29 August).

Fire crews from Devizes, Chippenham, Trowbridge, Corsham, Pewsey, Swindon and Frome were all sent to the scene.

In addition to eight fire engines, other appliances attended including an aerial ladder platform and operational support unit from Swindon, an operational support unit from Stratton. and a water carrier from Ramsbury.

“Prompt actions by the first crew in attendance from Devizes prevented the incident from escalating and meant that the thatch was not involved in the fire”, a spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

They added: “Crews used four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and two mechanical fans to deal with the incident.”
