A Swindon-based charity has suffered a second break-in in just months, with thieves causing significant damage and stealing vital equipment.
Volunteers from Wilts & Berks Canal Trust discovered the break-in at their site in Westleaze on Wednesday (17 September).
It follows a previous incident which saw the charity raise funds to repair a compactor, improve door security and continue community projects.
But this time, the damage is said to have rendered the group’s secure container unusable, with criminals also stealing a petrol mower and petrol canisters recently donated through a public appeal.
The ongoing appeal had only just helped the charity recover from the last incident.
Chloe Ford, branch chair, said: “Our team of volunteers do fantastic work for the local community, but we need equipment to do this and this has to be stored within the vicinity.
“This disruption is not only costly to the charity, but is having a knock-on disruption to larger projects.
“It’s a sad day for society when anything is damaged or stolen, especially from charity.”
The charity says the theft has a direct impact on its ability to carry out essential work and is now seeking further support from the public to fund increased security measures at the compound.
Wiltshire Police is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact the force quoting crime reference number 54250126539.
