Police have launched an investigation following a burglary at Malmesbury Abbey.
The famous religious site was cordoned off as a crime scene for most of this morning (Thursday), with several forensics combing the area for vital evidence.
A spokesperson for the Church of England said: “The Abbey has had a break-in, a significant amount has been stolen and forensics are assessing the scene.”
Wiltshire Police said that a number of items inside the abbey, including goblets and ornaments, were taken.
Money from inside the abbey’s charity box was also stolen.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the force on 101 quoting reference 54230121403.
Back in 2017, the Abbey was targeted by thieves – with precious 315-year-old silverware was stolen.
