A killer whose dangerous driving took the lives of two people in a horror crash in Gloucestershire has had her sentence increased.

Liberty Mitchell admitted two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and two counts of causing death by driving while uninsured.

It came following collision near Aldsworth, whereby her Mini Cooper hit an Audi A3, a Polestar 2 and a Seat Leon taxi in 2022. Two people died, and three others were seriously hurt.

The 21-year-old, of Chipping Norton, was originally sentenced to six years and eight months in prison. She was also banned from driving for eight years and four months after her release.

Following the sentencing, the Crown Prosecution Service referred the case to the Attorney General under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme.

The Court of Appeal heard the case in London on 28 July and increased Mitchell’s prison sentence to nine years and three months after ruling that the original sentence was unduly lenient.

Her driving disqualification was also extended from eight years and four months to 11 years and two months.

Sergeant Williams, from Gloucestershire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team, said: “Liberty Mitchell’s actions on Friday 2 December 2022 have had a long lasting impact on not only the families of those involved in the collision, but also the emergency service colleagues and members of the public who had to deal with the aftermath.

“I am pleased that the concerns which were raised about Mitchell’s original sentence length were listened to and that her prison sentence has been increased.

“Nothing will bring back Octavian Codreanu and Moyra Whelan or reverse the life changing injuries that several others sustained during the collision but I hope their families feel that justice has now been served.”

The investigation found that she had repeatedly driven at excessive speed and used her mobile phone while driving, despite having passed her driving test less than three weeks before the crash.

Officers also examined Mitchell’s social media accounts and found videos she had recorded for Snapchat while behind the wheel.

The footage showed her driving at speeds of up to 100mph on county roads and crossing onto the opposite side of the carriageway towards an oncoming vehicle as passengers shouted at her to stop.
