Police have called off a probe into the shooting of an ex-Premier League footballer’s home in Swindon – with the suspect and weapon used at the crime scene left a mystery.

A year has passed since armed police were called to Fitzroy Simpson’s home in Watermead, Stratton, on 13 December 2022, following reports of a gunman firing at the property.

The ex-footballer played in the Premier League for Manchester City from 1992–1995 and represented Jamaica internationally before retiring in 2008.

A police helicopter and dog unit were deployed on the day to his home, but no suspect was located and the gunman appeared to have fled the scene.

Shortly after the shooting, police launched an investigation into the crime, with detectives and police search dogs on the case.

Now, one year on, Wiltshire Police have confirmed that the investigation has been called off.

Wiltshire Police said: “Following a thorough investigation including extensive CCTV, house-to-house and forensic enquiries, this has been closed with no further action under outcome 18.

“Should more information come to light then we will reopen the case.”

It’s thought a gunshot damaged the front door of Simpson’s home

The former midfielder and left back started his career with Swindon Town before being transferred to Premier League side Manchester City in the 1992–93 season for £500,000.

After a couple of seasons he struggled to stay in the first eleven, so went on loan to Bristol City and was finally transferred to Portsmouth, where he played until 1999.

Simpson also won 43 caps for Jamaica from 1997 to 2003 and scored three goals. He represented the ‘Reggae Boyz’ in all three group stage matches at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Simpson captained his team in his final international match.

Further spells followed at Heart of Midlothian and Walsall before he continued his career in non-league football ahead of his retirement from the game in 2008.

He is currently listed as an active director for F S Sports Management Ltd, a role he has held since January 2019, with the address in Watermead being listed as his correspondence address on Companies House.
