UPDATE 5.30PM: Incident resolved, cordons lifted.
A possible explosive device has sparked a cordon outside Swindon railway station.
Police, including firearms officers, responded to the discovery of a suspected munition in Station Road at around 4pm today (Friday).
A section of pavement, around the taxi rank and bus stop, has been taped off. Station Road is also closed, and is within the cordoned area.
The railway station is open and operating as usual.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Members of the public are advised that a cordon has been put in place near Swindon Railway Station as a precaution to allow examination of a suspected munition.
“Closures are also in place in Station Road and Sheppard Road – with traffic being diverted at East Street.
“The Railway Station is still open for the public to use – however we are asking people to avoid the area if possible and remain outside the cordon while checks are carried out.”
