A police probe is continuing in a Swindon park after a man sustained significant injuries.
The 21-year-old victim suffered a number of wounds in Lawn Woods, including a life-changing slash wound to his hand – thought to have been caused by a machete.
Detectives investigating the incident believe the man was attacked by a group of people in The Planks, Old Town, at around 5pm yesterday (Tuesday, 28 June).
Wiltshire Police said the injured man was rushed to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, but Wiltshire 999s has been able to confirm the casualty was taken to Great Western Hospital.
Officers remain in the area today (Wednesday, 29 June) as the investigation continues. It’s understood extensive searches are being carried out.
Detective Sergeant Emma Kinderman, from Swindon CID, said: “This was a violent assault which has left the victim with significant injuries.
“Our early enquiries suggest that the attack was carried out by a group of people, and we believe they used some sort of bladed weapon.
“We don’t believe this was a random assault, but more likely to have been a targeted attack involving people who are known to each other.
“We have already started speaking to potential witnesses, but would urge anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, or who saw anything suspicious beforehand or shortly afterwards, to please get in touch.
“Similarly, if you either live locally or were driving through the area, and may have video doorbell, CCTV or dash cam footage, then please review this and make contact with police.”
The force is asking anyone with information about the assault to call Swindon CID on 101, quoting crime reference 54220067339. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
