Police officers narrowly escape injury after driver ploughs through crime scene

A driver ploughed through a crime scene in Chippenham on Friday night – despite blue lights, police tape and cones clearly blocking the road.

Officers shut the A420 Bristol Road following a road traffic collision yesterday (18 November) but one driver managed to miss the road closure altogether.

An investigation was underway after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle near Hathaway Medical Centre when a Renault Clio drove into the scene at an estimated 40mph.

The five police officers within the cordon were lucky to escape being hit by the vehicle – which was being driven by a woman thought to be aged in her 70s.

Had the police been investigating a serious injury or fatal road traffic collision, the consequences of the woman’s careless driving could have been disastrous.

The vehicle travelled through the middle of the scene, where there would have been vital evidence needed to secure a prosecution or establish the cause of the crash.

However, on this occasion, the injured pedestrian was later confirmed to have sustained less serious injuries than first thought and a forensic collision investigation was not required.

The woman was asked to provide her details to officers, who will now report the incident to the DVLA. It’s thought the agency will investigate whether she is fit to continue holding a licence.
