Police are now investigating after a disabled boy was pulled from his wheelchair and attacked at a school in Swindon earlier this week.

The 14-year-old was assaulted by other pupils on Wednesday (2 July), with footage of the incident at Commonweal School shared by his mum on social media.

It shows a fellow pupil hitting him, and then kicking him in the head – but what happened before the recording is not yet clear. Read more >

His mum said her son was “forced out of his wheelchair and thrown to the ground” before being “punched and kicked to the head by other pupils at his, what is supposed to be, ‘a safe place’ school”.

Commonweal School said it is aware of the video and is taking the incident seriously.

Wiltshire Police has today (Saturday) confirmed that it is investigating.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We are aware of footage circulating on social media of an assault at a school in Swindon where a child was pulled from a wheelchair and assaulted.

“We are investigating the matter and families of the people involved have been contacted.

“We would ask that people refrain from speculating on the incident or continuing to share the footage to avoid compromising the investigation.

“Members of the public should be aware that while the footage may be distressing, any reports of threats or abuse towards the families of those involved will be taken seriously and may result in criminal action.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101 quoting reference 54250083200.
