Emergency services were called to the B4696 Ashton Road, near Ashton Keynes, following a road traffic collision shortly before 3pm this afternoon (Sunday).

The incident involved one vehicle, a motorcycle. The vehicle left the road into the undergrowth, and off-duty firefighters were the first to arrive at the scene and provided first aid.

Critical care medics from the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity attended alongside local ambulance crews, fire co-responders from Cricklade and the police.

Despite their best efforts, the biker – a 68-year-old man from Chiseldon – was pronounced dead at the scene.

The off-duty firefighters who provided initial medical support were praised for the “brilliant job” they did, according to roads policing unit officer Sgt Will Ayres.

The road between the B4040 Malmesbury Road and High Road in Ashton Keynes is closed in both directions. There is also no access to the route via Swan Lane.

A forensic collision investigation is expected to get underway in due course, with the closure likely to remain in place until tomorrow morning (Monday, 26 August).

Witnesses or anybody with information or dashcam footage are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log 176 of 25 August. Alternatively, email the team directly on [email protected].
