UPDATE: Two women killed in M4 horror crash named as mother and daughter

More details have been revealed about the M4 crash that saw two women killed by a lorry.

The major incident sparked a huge emergency response on the motorway near Chippenham at around 9.10am on Friday (20 October) – as Storm Babet battered the country.

Five vehicles were involved in the incident – three cars, a National Highways vehicle and a lorry.

It’s understood a National Highways traffic officer was dealing with a minor road traffic collision on the hard shoulder shortly before the fatal incident.

It’s claimed a second collision occurred in the carriageway, which resulted in the lorry driver trying to avoid it. However, the lorry reportedly lost control and the vehicle toppled over – crushing a car.

Two women died in the horror smash and two other people sustained minor injuries. The families of the deceased are being supported by specialist officers.

Forensic collision investigators are still working to establish what happened in the lead-up to the tragedy and whether the bad weather contributed to the incident.

A significant number of resources were sent to the scene – including eight fire appliances, four ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) ambulance crew.

Great Western Air Ambulance and Wiltshire Air Ambulance were also in attendance, but responded in rapid response cars. Various other ambulance officers were also at the incident.

Any witnesses who have not already been identified or spoken to by officers, should call 101 and quote log number 93 of 20 October.
