A moped rider has been critically injured in a Swindon crash after ‘police contact’.
Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision in Butterworth Street, near Faringdon Road, at around 12.30am today (Thursday).
The incident involved a dark-coloured moped and a parked car – with the rider sustaining life-threatening injuries in the impact.
According to locals, officers and paramedics gave CPR at the scene, before the man – aged in his 50s – was rushed to hospital.
Wiltshire Police has confirmed it has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to “police contact with the moped rider prior to the incident”.
A spokesperson said: “Our enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
“Any witnesses to the collision or who saw the moped riding in the Faringdon Road or Park Lane areas is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 01225 694597 quoting log number 8 of today’s date.
“Alternatively, they can contact the team directly at [email protected].”
The road was closed by police in both directions for around seven hours.
