A man punched his mother and brother before stabbing a door with a knife in a violent rage.

Christopher Newbold, 27, was convicted of two counts of assault and criminal damage after a trial – which went ahead in his absence – earlier this year.

At Swindon Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Keith Ballinger said the defendant, of North Street, said his mother made him and his brother dinner on 23 August 2021.

But Newbold discovered that his brother had used some of this tomato ketchup – causing him to become angry and knock the dinner off of his sibling’s lap.

He shouted: “You think you can use my sh*t and get away with it” and threw a steel toe cap boot at his head.

His injured brother used an app to turn off the internet connection, and in retaliation, Newbold threw the Wi-Fi hub down the stairs.

As his sibling called 999 to report the incident, the defendant ran in and punched him three to four times in the face.

When their mother runs into the split them up, Newbold is heard threatening to stab him – armed with a knife, he stabbed the door multiple times, cutting his own hand.

He told his mother she was “going to get it” before punching her in the face.

Police officers arrived on the scene and arrested Newbold, who claimed he would never lay a finger on his mother, and only admitted the criminal damage offence.

The court heard how he has a previous conviction for assaulting his mother in 2014.

Mark Glendenning, defending, asked for pre-sentence report. The case was adjourned until 27 June.
