A man has died in a devastating house fire in Swindon in the early hours of today.

Firefighters from across Wiltshire responded to reports of the property blaze in Everleigh Road, Penhill, at 2.21am (5 September).

At the height of the fire, which ripped through the entire house, six fire engines were in attendance.

A body, a male in his 60s, was discovered within the address when it was safe for firefighters to enter.

At the time of publishing (9.05am), two fire engines remained at the scene with police guarding the area whilst specially trained fire investigators probe the cause of the flames.

Wiltshire Police released this statement on this morning’s tragedy:

“We were called to a residential fire at a property on Everleigh Road, Penhill, by our colleagues in the fire service shortly after 2.30am this morning (05/09).

“Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control but, sadly, the occupant of the house, a man in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

“Enquiries are ongoing but, at this stage, this is not being treated as suspicious.

“The local community are likely to see an increased presence of emergency services in the area today.”
