A major search operation is underway in Melksham after a person is understood to have entered the River Avon.
There’s a large emergency service presence in the area of Challeymead Bridge on the A350, which has been there since around 2pm.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service sent a number of appliances and officers to the scene, including a specialist water rescue unit.

A pile of clothing was located nearby by a member of the public, and officers were alerted to the find. However, the clothes were of different sizes and not thought to be related to the incident, but relating to a shop theft.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “We were called at 2.20pm following numerous reports expressing concern for the welfare of a man who was believed to have gone into the water from the Challymead Bridge on the A350.
“Both the fire service and the ambulance service were also involved in the initial response but are now standing down with only a police presence remaining at the current time.”
