A huge fire has broken out at a derelict nightclub in Swindon town centre.
Dozens of firefighters are tackling the blaze in Fleet Street this morning (Thursday) – with several busy roads closed as emergency services attend the scene.
The fire – which started at around 3.30am – involves the former Lava Lounge building, which has sat empty for many years.
At least six fire engines from across the county are at the incident, alongside a command unit and aerial ladder platform appliance.
Electricity engineers from SSE are also attending, as is Wales and West Utilities in relation to the gas supply.
The roof of the building has been destroyed as fire crews continued to battle the flames at 8am.
In a statement, Swindon Fire Station said: “We are dealing with a large commercial building fire between Fleet st and Henry st. Multiple appliances are in attendance, so please avoid the area.
“Fleet St, Holbrook Way and Milford Street are currently inaccessible but Bus Boulevard should be reopened by 9:30am.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
